Tourism

If it's a seaside location you long for, Calabria has some of the most unspoiled beaches and cleanest seas in Italy, offering superb value for money.  A little money in Calabria can go a long way, and with coastline on three sides, Calabria has mile upon mile of sandy beaches, rocky coves, spectacular headlands ... and space.

However, the sea is not all there is to Calabria, the mountain areas have slopes of rich vineyards, citrus fruit, olives and chestnut trees, and higher, dense forests of oak, beech and fir trees.

Very popular with Italian holidaymakers, tourism looks set to grow in Calabria with holiday resorts gaining popularity on the extensive coastline. Towns such as Scalea, Brancaleone, Tropea, Maratea, Diamante and Praia a Mare take full advantage of the superb sunny weather, magnificent  beaches and warm seas.

Calabria is also a region of remarkable beauty, with a long history dating back to its role at the heart of Magna Graecia (Greater Greece) in Classical antiquity; indeed far earlier than that. Explore its valleys on your Calabria vacation and you discover a culture apparently untouched by recent centuries.

Today, travelling as a tourist in Calabria means rediscovering the allure and the peace of the ancient villages in the hills, standing on mountainous terraces over the sea, and experiencing the local cuisine with its full-bodied flavours.

However, Calabria is also a modern region.  There is a vast motorway and railway network with efficient airports and accommodation facilities. There is a wide selection of accommodation from hotels, self catering, agriturismos and holiday rental properties to choose from.

Calabria's most important cities - Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia – are welcoming to visitors and are the starting points for charming excursions.

Calabria still retains its ancient ways and local customs, but there is a new mood about today, exemplified by the students of the local Universities, there is a peculiar feeling that this unique region is coming into her own these days with dramatic increases in exports and in tourism.

Climate:

Generally Calabria enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. Even in the coldest month, temperatures are never below 13 degrees, the average temperature during the summer is 26 degrees.

300 days of sunshine per year almost offer a fair weather guarantee. Cooling sea breezes keep the summer temperatures comfortable.

From the beginning of May to November the emerald green sea is an inviting place for a swim. Even at the end of October, swimming is comfortable.
